Tomate de Arbol; Tamarillo; or, Tree tomato; Cyphomandra Betacea; grows in the Peruvian Andes, certain regions of Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile. The Tree Tomato is believed to have originated in the mountains of Java in Indonesia; the Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit grows in Colombia at altitudes between 6,000-10,000 feet above sea level.
The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit has an ellipsoidal shape about 2.5-4.0 inches long with a 1.5-2.0 inch central diameter. The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit has a smooth, strong, sour and non-edible skin. The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit seeds are similar to those of the common tomato.
The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit has a low caloric content; and, it is a rich source of vitamin A and minerals such as: Calcium, Iron and Phosphorous. Along with Vitamins B, C and K it is a source of protein and carotene. It is unique in that; it has been found to contain gamma aminobutiric acid; which lowers the blood pressure; as a result, it is highly recommended for people with hypertension but not for people with low blood pressure. The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) fruit is not considered a sweet fruit; still, it is widely used to make Fruit Juices as well as Marmalades; Sweets; and, Syrupy candy; and, it is popular as a Cocktail mixer.
