Lulo; naranjilla; or, nuquí ; scientifically known as Solanum Quitoense; is the fruit from a solanacea plant that grows spontaneously in the Andes at altitudes between 4,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level especially under the canopy of taller trees in temperate and shady areas near water streams with temperatures between 62° and 68° Fahrenheit.
This Lulo-Fruit producing plant originated in Ecuador; where it is still widely cultivated. Over time; this Lulo-Fruit plant has extended its territory along the Eastern range of the Andes Mountains into the Cauca Valley of Colombia.
The Lulo-fruit has an oval shape with a diameter between 1.5 to 2.5 inches with a yellow, orange to brown coloured skin covered with small thorns. Lulo-Fruit Internally has four compartments separated by membranous partitions full of a greenish pulp and many small seeds. The Lulo-Fruit’s juicy pulp has an acidic flavour; and, it is widely used to make: Fruit Juice; Nectars; Marmalades, Desserts; and, is an excellent Cocktail mixer.
